Dear Ann & Pepe Perron and the extended family of Camp Nakanawa,

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I write to inform you that a member of our Valkyrie sisterhood and mother of another Valkyrie sister has passed away. Anne Eugenia Mercer Kornegay spent her summers at Camp Nakanawa; however, I am not sure which year she was a Tent Row lady. She loved camp enough to send her daughter Bitsy Kornegay Hudnall, Tent Row 1988 to enjoy this magical place we all hold so dear. Anne and Bitsy held the mother-daughter bond that can only be created through the ties developed at Camp Nakanawa which shown through in their daily lives as they both taught at the Episcopal School of Dallas.

The obituary is included below, but I want to let all member of the Camp Nakanawa family know that we had lost a sister.

Please share this with anyone that my know either Anne or Bitsy, especially Mop who was a friend.

All my Nakanawa love,

Tricia Jamison and Robin Jamison

Anne Eugenia Mercer Kornegay (1944 - 2012)

Anne Eugenia Mercer Kornegay was born May 22, 1944, and passed away Monday, Memorial Day, May 28, 2012. She was a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, and grandmother. Anne was born in Bremerton, Washington. Her family moved to Dallas after World War II and she grew up in the Park Cities. As a child, Anne enjoyed summers at Camp Nakanawa in Crossville, Tennessee, and many family weekends at Little Sandy Hunting and Fishing Club. She graduated from Highland Park High School in 1962 and would be celebrating her 50th high school reunion this year. After graduating high school, Anne attended Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia, where she would later serve on their alumnae board for many years. Anne then received a master's degree in mathematics from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, which then led her to New Orleans, Louisiana where she lived for several years. During this time, she met and married Bryan Brightman "Barney" Kornegay of Cameron, Louisiana. They raised their three children, "Bitsy" Anne, Bryan and Blair, in Baton Rouge. After living in Baton Rouge for 23 years, Anne moved to Dallas where she lived the last 17 years of her life. She was a teacher, coach and school administrator for over 40 years. Family, friends, and her students' successes were Anne's true joy. As a parent and school administrator, she never missed a performance or sporting event. Anne always expected the best from those around her, was gracious, honorable, and a faithful servant of God. Everyone who knew Anne respected her. She was someone who quietly helped you become a better person each and every day. She changed lives and has left this earth a better place than she found it. Anne is survived by her daughter, "Bitsy" Anne Kornegay Hudnall, her husband Matt and their children, JB and Kaylie; her son, Bryan Brightman Kornegay, Jr., his wife Corisa and their son, Brightman; her son, Barney "Blair" Kornegay, and his partner Michael; her sister, Marilyn Mercer Luckett, her husband Peyton, and their children, Gray and Lacey; her brother, Blair Gray Mercer, Jr., his wife Stephanie, and their children, Jack and Mac; her brother, Edward Manly Mercer, his wife Anne, and their children, William, Lou, and Austin; and many other extended family members. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be given in honor of Anne to Sweet Briar College for their Faculty Support Fund or to Good Shepherd Episcopal School in Dallas for their Teacher Endowment Fund.
