TIES Leadership Weekend Held in May 2007
Saturday, July 07, 2007
We are delighted to be reporting back to you about our first TIES event. It was fun, productive, poignant, restorative -- all we had hoped and more. Below you will find highlights from the weekend, comments from attendees, and an update on future plans.
The three of us are so very grateful for the ties to camp, the ties to each of you, and the chance to help channel the love and energy and resources you together represent to help the Place We All Hold Dear.
WoHeLo,
Shelly, Margaret, and Donya
P.S. Hold the date for another Service and Leadership Weekend, same time next year, May 2 - 4, 2008. |

What a Weekend!
In order to get ideas from all decades and many perspectives, a group of former campers and counselors (including you) was invited to camp in early May for a Leadership Weekend. Close to 60 arrived, Egypt buckets and sleeping bags in hand, for a weekend of serious planning, camp work projects, and an incredible amount of laughter, nostalgia and fun!
Everyone chipped in, from the youngest attendees, who are recent college graduates, all the way up to our beloved camp doctor of many decades, Dr. Fran, now in her 80s (who weeded flower beds with the best of them). People flew in from Chicago, Denver, New Orleans, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. Our goal was to brainstorm about the best ways to launch TIES, involve all alumnae, and build a solid base of financial support for TIES projects.
The leadership group focused on three major areas: Fund Raising, Communication (including the building of our database, web presence, and capabilities to communicate with the Nakanawa family), and Projects (future at-camp weekends, TR Reunions, etc.). We developed ambitious plans in all these areas, which will be even better once we hear from those who wanted to attend but could not, and from the many talented alumnae we haven't yet even reached.
The Leadership weekend attendees signed up for many specific roles (see the Volunteer opportunities below), but many more volunteers are needed. Please look at the list of projects and needs to see where you fit in.

Events Update
The Events group (under the Leadership of Margaret, and guidance of Ann) developed ambitious plans for the future. Here are some highlights:
- Service Week-ends - Early May is definitely the time to organize our TIES service week-end. We help prepare camp for its summer season, while reconnecting with old friends. We will firm up and share the May '08 date in the near future.
- TR Reunions - The goal of the TR Reunion week-end "event" is that TIES Alumnae can help coordinate, organize, and even host this yearly function. We will try our hand at creating the working model during this reunion week-end in July. We'll give you feed-back at summer's end.
- Mother / Daughter Week-ends - There seems to be a lot of excitement about this event. And the marketing potential for camp is tremendous. Right now, we are working with Ann and Pepe about '08 dates and the week-end "model." We'll keep you posted on this.
- City Chairs - These volunteers organize gatherings of alumnae in their respective cities or communities. This is NOT to be confused with the camp representatives, whose very important job is to find great campers! We really need your help. Please volunteer as a City Chair in the Volunteer area below.
- Family Camps - This is similar to the Mother / Daughter week-end, but with families. This, too, is in the planning stage.

Fund Raising Update
One of our break-out sessions at the TIES Leadership weekend was the Fundraising (or "E" in TIES....."Endowment") focus. It was a most REMARKABLE session! Imagine having 30+ of the most amazing women you can imagine, brainstorming about ways to enhance and enrich Camp Nakanawa. We had lawyers, entrepreneurs, consultants, marketers, professional volunteers, development professionals, and yes.... full time moms.....all Nakanawa alumnae, striving to achieve the best for the "camp we all hold dear." We collectively arrived at a primary focus for our fundraising on improving camp's facility, and helping to protect the future of Nakanawa.
We did an "out of the box" type brainstorming session, in which we realized that the sky's the limit. Please let us know if you have a specific interest in philanthropy or development. We would love to have your help in reaching for the Nakanawa stars! More to come later........

| Communications Update
We identified the core functionality that will be required to really get TIES started, as well as hoped-for capabilities for the future. This newsletter is a start, and much more is in the works.
Core functionality requirements for TIES communications:
- Self-service list management (people enter and maintain their own contact and camp history information)
- Newsletter distribution that looks professional and attractive, and is compliant with the CAN SPAM act
- Online acceptance of donations
We also feel TIES could greatly benefit as an organization, or create value for camp through:
- An online camp "commissary"
- Online event registration
- Social networking functionality to enable us to find each other, by TR year, geographic location, current occupation, etc.
We have identified a handful of online services, and are in the process of considering which of them will best meet our needs - more on this soon!

Comments From Attendees

Since our special weekend, we have heard from many of you. Here are a few of the comments that have come our way:
My thoughts... other than laughing so hard my side ached and being able to escape the "rat race" and fill the ole cup back up... What a beautiful, inspiring, fun and empowering weekend...For whatever reason, I started to cry when I left camp this morning. The scene was unique in its dappled light of the sunrise and fog but I had to humbly take a moment to thank God... to thank Him for the decades of memories, the present, the future and above all the chance to once again renew heartfelt friendships. What an amazing, diverse, talented group of women. Each on their own personal journey yet... each one deeply bound by the unique love we all share for Nakanawa. Thank you three for your vision, and hard work. It's never easy to rally that may women but you were so successful. You know what I learned my 1st year senior as a camper? LIFE IS A DARING ADVENTURE OR NOTHING AT ALL!!! Here's to adventure.... Thank you for allowing us the chance to strengthen those connections and empower us once again with the unexplainable Nakanawa thing.
Libby Beall Goff TR 78
Its going to be difficult to match the enjoyment I had at the TIES weekend. Seeing old friends and making new friends is so "Nakanawa." Sitting in the Wigwam with all the women and sharing our experiences, hopes and dreams for camp was amazing. And, where else in the world can one be where everyone in the room REALLY knows where Egypt is?!? The talent and abilities that were present within the group just reconfirms what most of us already know - Camp Nakanawa brings out the best in women. I am looking forward to helping out in any way I can.
Carol Porta Kleinhoff
Many, many thanks to Ann and Pepe for allowing me the privilege to serve. I had such a wonderful time; the weekend was very emotional and lots of fun! Being with friends, old and new, was the icing on the cake. I particularly loved singing camp songs...so many took on a new, deeper meaning. All weekend I kept thinking that when I was in TR I thought that I understood what it meant to be a Nakanawa girl; I don't think I had a clue until this weekend. Now, as Meriwether's camper days are over, you've provided me an opportunity to return to Nakanawa a very small amount of what Nakanawa gave to me. I look forward to participating with Nakanawa TIES in the years to come and again, thank you very much for this opportunity. Until we meet again,
Frances Robinson Snipes TR 77
Congratulations on a job well done -- You did such a good job. And what a time we had! I can't remember a better week-end.
Dr. Fran -- camp doctor in 70's
I thought the weekend was one of the most powerful, gripping, badly needed experiences I've had in a while. I didn't even think about the rain. I was just so glad to be back in the arms of the place that held me so dearly and that is in my heart everywhere I go. Thank you again for all that you did to make this experience possible!
Anne "O" Alexander, TR '78
What a wonderful time we had at Nakanawa! My sides still ache from laughing so hard during story time Saturday night! Thank you again for a most successful Nakanawa TIES gathering! I look forward to seeing you and working with you to make good things happen for our campers during Summer 2007! Wo He Lo!!!
Casey Colwick Fisher TR 55
I had the best time. I don't remember the last time was that I laughed SO hard. I absolutely can't wait to come this summer for my reunion. Selfishly, I am more excited to show my daughter around than anything else. I truly loved meeting everyone and seeing old friends. How great to be somewhere that everyone feels so strongly about and has such a great connection ~ that is what made it special even when I didn't have my own "camp group" there.
Kelsie Costello Wagner TR 87
Not only was the weekend just plain fun(there's nothing better than going back to camp), but the progress made and ideas floated were beyond my wildest dreams. You have set something in motion that is bigger than any one of us and has long been needed and hoped for. I was sharing the weekend events with my husband. He loves to hear about it. I was telling him about the evening we sat around the fire in the Wigwam and told stories. I realized that the passing of those stories to some of the younger alumni is a lot like the story-telling history of ancient tribes! I think it's true, that one of the things that attracts and keeps so many people involved in camp is that sense of history, that sense of belonging to something, somewhere, that is true and pure and sweet in this crazy world we call home...something that was there before you and will be there after you.
